Book Description: The story revolves around the children of the Deep Wood Camp and their efforts to rescue a feral child locked away at the Millbrook Estate. The story is told by the main character, Danny Willis, and has plenty of twists and turns, from digging up graves to the rescued boy's ability to control animals. Other members of the Deep Wood Camp include Ant, Finn and Danny's brother Nick.
Excerpt from the Book: For the next ten minutes I told Clare everything that happened to us from the beginning. The rescue mission. Hiding Billy in the Deep Wood Camp. Tom Waters. The digging up of Billy's grave. Escaping from Lord Millbrook's car. Operation Safe House. Biting Mr Chamber's finger off and the rat invasion on the Underground. I left nothing out. I explained how much power and influence Millbrook had and told her we were going to set up a meeting with a newspaper to expose him and save Billy. When I finally finished talking, my jaw ached and Clare sat staring vacantly at Billy who'd fallen asleep on top of his fur coat holding the cat. Then without speaking, she got onto her hands and knees and leant over Billy's curled up body. She gently lifted the shredded shirt Billy was wearing further up his back and studied his skin minutely. Criss-crossing his back were red raised scars. Some of them looked badly infected. I could feel Fiona shake next to me as she tried to hold the tears in. Eventually Clare spoke. "Did they do this?" I nodded and she shook her head slowly, her cheeks were scarlet. I knew my sister well enough to tell she was beginning to get angry.
